Canon's former flagship faces off against Sigma's reverse-engineered clone. Sigma's cheaper, but can it measure up? Are the rumors of mis-metering based in truth? Will there be interesting bits of information on how to use your flash? You bet!
The final version incorporates a few more of my thoughts from the past two days. I put it through a fair number of hoops, so hopefully you readers will feel like it's a comprehensive review. If not, feel free to e-mail us and we'll try and address your concerns!
I added a write-up of the 350D's performance compared with the 20D at a fundraising event that I shot. Check it out, the 350D really is shaping up to be another hit in Canon's line-up. Also, if you are interested in buying, keep in mind that Amazon have a $50 or $100 gift certificate offer for purchases over $500 and $1000 respectively. That offer expires tomorrow. A $100 gift certificate is a 50mm f/1.8 with a nice filter you know?
Check it out here. Long story short, I like the 350D, but keep your eyes peeled for an update this weekend after I cover an event on Friday using both the 350D and the 20D.
Word on the street says Rebel XTs are showing up here and there. I managed to snag one, it should arrive tomorrow. I got the only one available from my source so neener neener :P That been said, if you are not in a desperate hurry, Amazon has the best deal going on Rebel XT right now. What's the deal? $50 gift certificate for any purchase between $500-999 and $100 gift certificate for any purchase over $1000. So ... a Rebel XT in black with the 18-55mm lens is going to cost you $999, and you just have to buy something trivial like CD-Rs to put you over $1000. If you feel like going the Rebel XT in black body only way, a nice starter lens is the Sigma 18-125mm for $270. If this is your first DSLR, the 18-125 is a great range to experiment with to work out what sort of focal lengths you prefer. From there, it is easy to move on to more specialized, higher quality lenses too.
